The Week at Wenty
If you are reading this now, then thank you and I apologise. They say better late than never but somehow that just doesn’t cut it. From now on, you will find this and the weekly results updated on Monday night. I have asked Suzy to withhold any of the normal wifely niceties back, until its up and available, so you know I’m serious.
We had a great day on Australia Day, great golf, BBQ, raffles, Beer tasting (loved the ginger beer), music and a fun presentation.
We even had a visit from the local Boys in Blue who said they had a call about a robbery on site. I put them straight and told them that there were no burglars at this club and they left saying that they had put us on notice and expect them to be vigilant in their follow up. One thing I did report was the damage to our sacred Golden Goblet, awarded to the winner of our monthly medal in the woman’s grade. Sue West won the rights for the month and on accessing said Goblet, we discovered it to be broken at the stem, leaving it looking more like the holy grail. Our local “serve and protects” indicated that they would follow up on that tragedy as well.
The month’s medal round saw Neil Davies shoot 71 off the stick to win A grade, Bert Kryger crunch C grade. Bert was the rose between to thorny visitors as Neil Hook won the scratch and that pesky Richard Mason came runner up. Richard backed up his 42 points and the win on Thursday so he is playing some great golf at the moment. Richard still holds the record for the fastest round of 18 holes at 1hr, 56 mins and remains the Usain Bolt of the golfing world, without the sponsors and the nifty running shoes.
The C grade medal went to one of our favourites in Steve Huxley, who had a 65 nett and not only won the medal but also the Golden Guzzler.
Steve, Bert and Neil also qualify for the 2019 Gold Medal Trophy.
Saturday was also the playoff for the 2018 weekend Gold medal.
Farquhar Boyd is the reigning 2017 champion and qualified last January for the playoff. There must be something about the Xmas and new year period for Farquhar as he has backed up his 2017 win and defended the crown in 2018. Well done Farquhar.
Joss Bennett qualified as a B grader last year for the playoff but has now joined the ranks of those much maligned “bloody A Graders”. Joss is still playing like he lives on the course and on Saturday won the 2018 Gold Medal for B grade, as well as the putting (24) and the NTP on 15th. A good day out for Joss who has not had a drink since New Years. Do what I do Joss and have a lemon lime and bitters to celebrate. Beautiful!
On a count back. Those words strike fear into the hearts of many a golfer where you end up first loser and see your handicap plummet to boot. Neil Griffith is one of our newer members who, on his day, can score anything, and on this day, he grafted and grinded his way to victory over Laurance Petkevitch, on a count back. Well done Neil and I’ll see you on presentation night, medal in hand.
The big news on Saturday though revolves around one of our most unassuming members, the lovely Glenn Brown. Glenn secured the first Hole in One of the year on the 5th and wins a Flag and a spot on the honour board as part of the deal. I have yet to confirm exactly how this was accomplished, but I am assured there was no deflections off any low flying, Bronze Headed Geese, rather a majestically struck 5 Iron that never looked like missing.
Aside from Richard Mason winning on Thursday with 42 points, John Roberts and Walter “lefty” Mockli won the teams event which was a 2B worst ball. It’s one of those events which make you want to wear your underpants on the outside, but John and Walter held their breaths the longest, beating the rest with 31 points and also qualifying for the Teams Trophy playoff in November.
Talking about Lefties, it was Lesley Robinson who had 39 points in Tuesdays Medley to beat the rest of the 35 in the field. Tuesdays just keeps on growing and along with our Thursday comps, our mid-week numbers now consistently outnumber our Saturday Comps.
Thanks to all of our Mid-week Warriors.
It was with your help and all of our regular Saturday players that we were able to hit 9400 competitive rounds in 2018, the highest number for years.
Wentworth Falls Juniors
Well that’s it, the school holidays are over and all our junior golfers are back to school next week. For those of you breathing a sigh of relief that the kids will be taking time away from the course, think again. The FREE junior golf clinics return next week. The Beginners clinic is on a Wednesday and the Advanced on Tuesdays. Both clinics kick off at 4:00pm. Contact Wentworth Falls Pro Shop on 4757 1202 for more details.
If the clinics aren’t enough, there is also the Junior Cadets 10-hole challenge for the juniors to fine tune their skills. This is a FREE weekly competition for all WFCC junior members and takes place at 2:30pm every Saturday.
