The Week at Wenty

Happy New year to all.

I’m back from all the family things like rescuing my favourite uncle from a bottle of scotch, full double plate and grill barbeques, too many potentially violent games like “Articulate, Pictionary and Monopoly, falling Xmas trees, overzealous unwrapping of presents and falling asleep before the big fireworks at Midnight NYE. No wonder everyone is so worn out after the Xmas break. The golf was pretty good too.

The new rules are in and we have decided to wait and watch before we introduce any of the optional local rules like OOB and capping in stroke play. It’s all about pace of play and until we get fields of 170 playing off both tees, any problems we have, has little to do with these.

My only suggestion is always hit a provisional if you are uncertain, just so you avoid the walk of shame back to the tee.

The new Golfing Program is on the Website so check it out when you get a chance.

I’ll just cover a couple of changes from previous years as they are upcoming.

We will have one Gold Medal Trophy this year for Men and one for Women. This Trophy will be part of the annual Presentation Night. Qualification will occur as normal with Mid-week (first is Thursday 17th Jan) and Saturday medal winners (first is Saturday 26th Jan) with playoff in November.

We will have a Teams trophy this year along the lines of the Gold Medal Trophy. This Trophy will also be part of the annual Presentation Night. Once a month between January and October, winning mid-week (first is Thursday 24th Jan) and Saturday teams (first is 12th Jan) will qualify for a November Playoff. You can play with a different partner each time and the only issue will be if you manage to qualify more than once. You will then need to decide who is your preferred partner. Good luck with that!

So………..to the golf this week,

This year we have re-introduced ourselves to Metropolitan Mixed Pennants. 6 brave teams met the challenge of the weather and the tyranny of distance by travelling to Balgowlah on Sunday. Our adventuresome team consisted of Ken and Lea Schaefer, Andrew and Linda Loftus, Magda Cawthorne and Jeff Pails, Laurance and Mary Petkevitch, Andrew McLean and Kerry Regan, Steve and Sue West.

A little-known tradition in Mixed pennants that we did not know when we teed off, was that if a Mixed Pennants team looses all matches, then that loosing team has to do a nudie run around the 18th Green. Thanks to the golfing gods that Jeff Pails stiffed his 2nd shot on the par 4, 18th to within a foot to win the final match 1 up. The folk of Balgowlah were saved from the forest of fine fettled frolicking flesh that would have ensued.

Just joking, but we did get done 5 to 1.

Saturday was a day for the ages. There wasn’t a dry eye in the place as Geoff Harris made the best presentation speech of the year after winning the day for the first time since he was 16. Just to put this in context, Led Zepplin and the Beetles were still together, the only cars to buy were either Fords or Holdens, there was no internet, mobile phones or Paleo diets, there were still typing pools and depression was only a weather phenomenon.

Good on you Geoff, all things come to those who wait.

Geoff’s efforts almost overshadowed by an incredible 4 under par 66 from Bronco Djura and he will now be the first Wenty member for a long time with a plus Handicap.

Friday’s 10-hole comp is back and had a field of 23 with Chazz Ritchie winning on a countback from Steve Pole, scoring 23 points.

Thursday was a Stableford event with a great field of 80 players. The kids are on the charge now that it’s the school holiday period and this was made crystal with Junior Matteen Mashal scoring a whopping 45 points off 11 or 72 off the stick. What a great round. It must have something to do with that super Moustache he is sporting now. I couldn’t grow one till I was 30 and Tom Daniels is still trying hard.

Tuesday saw another bumper field of 43 tee it up in the medley with Magda Cawthorne continuing to chop strokes of her handicap winning the day on a count back from and always classy David Cameron.

So….., the Jackpot Hole is growing again and the Jackpot in the Club House with The Spin and Win raffles now at close on $400. The raffles kick off again this Friday 11th.

Coming right up:

Tuesday 8th January: Medley and Jackpot Hole 9th

Thursday 10th January: Trivia at the club starts up again

Friday 11th January: Friday 10-hole comp, raffles and Buffet

Saturday 12th January: Round 1 of 2019 Teams Trophy

                  Wentworth Falls Country Club Juniors

2018 was an extremely successful year for our juniors. Many a handicap has come down, monthly medals were won in all grades, two of our kids made it into academy of sport squads and who could ever forget the amazing run to the semi-final of the Junior Pennants? Let’s hope that 2019 is just as exciting.

It started off very promisingly with Matteen Mashal winning the Thursday open competition with a whopping 45 points (2 over off the stick). In the Friday 10-hole competition, Chazz Ritchie won the day with 23 points. There were plenty of juniors playing on Saturday too and best for the day was Aiden Cullen with 38 points.

Next week is the first major JNJG tournament for the year, the Harvey Norman Week of Golf, and WFCC has 3 juniors playing. It’s a gruelling tournament played on 5 courses over 5 days. Good luck Aiden Cullen, Chazz Ritchie and Harry Daniels. Go get ‘em!

I just wanted to write to let you know just how impressed I was with your club. In fact, everyone who attended the lunch was very, very impressed. Your staff could not have been more friendly, efficient and helpful. Even the young guy behind the bar was super-friendly whilst still being professional.  The food, without exception, was tremendous.
– Anne Hutchins
We often take family and visitors to the Thursday/Friday night servings and always found that everybody has enjoyed the food. The service is great with contact with the chef and his staff are wonderful and nothing is a problem for them even on a fully booked night they are so obliging.
– Mark R
Lovely Country golf club, with nice views over the course. Friendly atmosphere and reasonable prices.
– Martin C
An excellent venue for a special function. Friendly helpful staff and scrumptious food. I attended two Christmas lunches this past week and both were terrific. Also the Friday night carvery is worth trying. And the coffee is good too.
– Maunie K
This club has a real atmosphere about it and it never fails to please. Food, service all good. The servings are very generous and on most occasions are served quite quickly. The wine prices are attractive.
– Geoffrey W
My grandparents live in the area and after staying longer than expected visiting them suggested we have dinner at the country club. The only complaint I have is that they didn't tell me how good It was! - or I wouldn't have had so much for lunch.
– r b
A great course with attractive flora and fauna, and highly recommended for anyone visiting the Blue Mountains.
– Naysan H
Thank you to my good friends at Wentworth Falls Country Club for your support and Fund raising to help me get to World Championships in Germany. This club and its community have supported me over the past 10 years, and for that I'm grateful. The Friendliest and best club in the Mountains.
– Moe Westmoreland
The Society of Mountain Artists had their Christmas lunch at the club last Thursday. It was the best ever, the club goes out of its way to make it work and the food was outstanding.
– Marie Morris
My family and I would like to thank Jackie and Matt and everyone else at the club for making our daughters and son in law Monique & Joel's wedding such a wonderful night. It was an amazing night and all of our guests commented on the friendliness of your staff and how lovely the food was. I thank you again from the bottom of my heart.
– Julie Christie
Cannot express how well the staff helped on our wedding day, food was delicious, great atmosphere. Thank you.
– Nicky Fungo
I had my wedding here in November… place looked great, staff are so helpful. Definitely recommend.
