 The Week at Wenty

Things are ramping up for Christmas 2018 and we can’t wait for the Barrow of Booze, Xmas Hams and the Pro-shop raffle draws all happening next week. Mo’s Bistro is offering a Buffet on Friday Nights and next Friday we will have Jazz at the club as well.

We’ve already had our own Xmas Present with full Dams and Green staff who continue to punch well above their weight, ably assisted by incredibly resilient and committed volunteers. How good do the fairways look? I wish I had as much hair on my head as our fairways have grass. Having fairway grass has added 500m to the course length, either that or I’m not hitting the ball as far, which is also possible.

Sets us up for a great summer of golf.

The Club has a Xmas present in Michael Hancott who was given the job of breathing life back into our club. Kick Starting an old Harley Davidson Shovelhead with bare feet would be an easier assignment.

In just a few short months, Michael is now really having an impact and is creating some buzz around the club, expanding it’s offerings and leading our bar staff through what has been some pretty tough times.

Thanks to the golfing gods for our beer, wine and bar staff.

We cannot, not mention Dave and Liane in the Pro-shop. I cannot imagine not having them as part of our family.

So, the 2019 golf program is about to be released. The program is designed to be more inclusive, appreciate the “Life Load” we are all under, recognise the contribution of mid-week golfers, and also focus on fresh team events.

A couple of key changes:

Club Champs will be over 3 Saturdays this year. Dave from d’Vine Cellars is sponsoring the event again and on the second Saturday, we have a wine tasting, music and raffles with Presentation. The last round will have a seeded draw with a beer tasting, a barbeque, music and raffles with a special jackpot offering.

The club Foursomes Champs will be played over 1 day only. Again, we will have something special happening for presentation.

We will have one Gold Medal Trophy this year for Men and one for Women. Qualification will occur as normal with Mid-week and Saturday medal winners from January to October qualifying for the November Playoff.

We will have a Teams trophy this year along the lines of the Gold Medal Trophy. Once a month between January and October, winning mid-week and Saturday teams will qualify for a November Playoff.

Next year will see the last year we will have either the O’Dell Moore or the Dr R.B. Holiday Matchplay events. Whilst too much golf is never enough, we recognize that we are all busy and family time is so important. It's tough to keep these competitions on track especially later in the year.

Next year sees the inaugural Murray and Pauline Patterson Celebration Matchplay Trophy. This recognises the incredible contribution that both Murray and Pauline have made to our club. Open to Men and Women, there will be a qualification process in April for both midweek and Saturday players.

Next year also sees the introduction of a Women’s grade competing for the Wilson Pickering Graded Matchplay.

It will be on the website soon so check it out.

So………..to the golf this week,

If you read weather forecasts, Saturday was all doom and gloom with a storms and heavy rain warning.

To me, it was like back to the days when Alan Wilky would stick his figure out of a window at the ABC and declare there would be a good chance of rain the next day. Bottom line is that all the computers were wrong, and we did not get a drop of rain during the comp.

All golfers dry and happy.

Paul Garnsey brought his son Graham along for the day and it was “family first” as not only did Paul win the day with a cracking 42 points but the Family Garnsey won the teams by a Wenty Country Club mile. I think Paul was inspired and celebrating the fact that we did not get rid of Reshs on tap.

Magda Cawthorne won the ladies and we were drawing the raffles when the rain finally hit.

On Thursday, our ladies had their Xmas party whilst out on the course, Laurance Petkevitch had his first hole in one since he was 9 years old, on our Jackpot hole 9th.

Just saying…………., but Laurance will have to be happy with a cute little white flag as Adam Pabian won the $576 jackpot last week leaving Laurance with around $40 for Xmas.

In the same group on Thursday, some burglar was wearing his best mask, as he shot 71 off the stick for 44 points to win the day. Mark Edwards had sensational 41 points to come runner up, but on the flip side, he did win a couple of Xmas Hams the week before.

Laurance’s Hole in One was the 6th of the year and joins fellow Aces Ron Wiseman, Steve Giles, Mark Griffin, Graem Bush and Graem Bush (Yes, Graeme has had 2 in competition, as well as one in a practice round). The world’s greatest B Grader strikes again.

Thursday was also our 2/3-man Ambrose Team event with Murray Patterson and John Goodrick combining beautifully for an impressive 68 scratch score whilst Ron Wiseman and Colin Foster won the nett score with 61.17.

On Tuesday, Allan Callow took some time off riding the rough mower for a much-deserved win.

                  Wentworth Falls Country Club Juniors

The holidays are coming, the holidays are coming!!! This means that lots of juniors will be out on the course on a regular basis. If you see a junior’s name down to play on a Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday feel free to pop your name down with them. I can promise you, they are a pleasure to play with.

On Sunday, Chazz Ritchie and Harry Daniels ventured down to Wollongong to play in the Wollongong Junior Open. By the 15th hole both the lads had lost their hats due to the howling wind, but they both played well. Harry was lucky enough to beat his handicap and sneak a podium finish. A par on the 501m 18th clinched it.

In a good week for little Harry, he also won the prize for best junior score in the Saturday open competition.

I just wanted to write to let you know just how impressed I was with your club. In fact, everyone who attended the lunch was very, very impressed. Your staff could not have been more friendly, efficient and helpful. Even the young guy behind the bar was super-friendly whilst still being professional.  The food, without exception, was tremendous.
– Anne Hutchins
We often take family and visitors to the Thursday/Friday night servings and always found that everybody has enjoyed the food. The service is great with contact with the chef and his staff are wonderful and nothing is a problem for them even on a fully booked night they are so obliging.
– Mark R
Lovely Country golf club, with nice views over the course. Friendly atmosphere and reasonable prices.
– Martin C
An excellent venue for a special function. Friendly helpful staff and scrumptious food. I attended two Christmas lunches this past week and both were terrific. Also the Friday night carvery is worth trying. And the coffee is good too.
– Maunie K
This club has a real atmosphere about it and it never fails to please. Food, service all good. The servings are very generous and on most occasions are served quite quickly. The wine prices are attractive.
– Geoffrey W
My grandparents live in the area and after staying longer than expected visiting them suggested we have dinner at the country club. The only complaint I have is that they didn't tell me how good It was! - or I wouldn't have had so much for lunch.
– r b
A great course with attractive flora and fauna, and highly recommended for anyone visiting the Blue Mountains.
– Naysan H
Thank you to my good friends at Wentworth Falls Country Club for your support and Fund raising to help me get to World Championships in Germany. This club and its community have supported me over the past 10 years, and for that I'm grateful. The Friendliest and best club in the Mountains.
– Moe Westmoreland
The Society of Mountain Artists had their Christmas lunch at the club last Thursday. It was the best ever, the club goes out of its way to make it work and the food was outstanding.
– Marie Morris
My family and I would like to thank Jackie and Matt and everyone else at the club for making our daughters and son in law Monique & Joel's wedding such a wonderful night. It was an amazing night and all of our guests commented on the friendliness of your staff and how lovely the food was. I thank you again from the bottom of my heart.
– Julie Christie
Cannot express how well the staff helped on our wedding day, food was delicious, great atmosphere. Thank you.
– Nicky Fungo
I had my wedding here in November… place looked great, staff are so helpful. Definitely recommend.
– Christina Clarke
We had our wedding reception here last year and absolutely loved it. Awesome food and we got to drive up in a golf buggy.
