The Week at Wenty
Between Big Als Karaoke, The Blues Bros, Elvis re-incarnations, a BBQ marathon, a big Hello to our new Caterers, on the Golf course there was a resurfacing of the Cullen Empire and a grand Wenty Victory by our Ladies of Bonneville, Lea Schaefer and Leonie Wilson.
In the Clubhouse………………,
The Elvis festival has come and gone for another year. Each morning kicked off with Big Als Karaoke, accompanied by lots of sore heads and questionable song choices. Participants were saved by the good ol’ Wenty Barby. The Saturday and Sunday teams were led by Tom Hickey and Godfrey Lucas and they performed like meat flavoured poetry. They were the New Ford Mustang of Barbies. Slick, Fast and pretty to watch. My involvement on Friday’s effort was more along the lines of a 64 EH Holden. Hard to start, unreliable and far too much smoke. But……………everyone got fed.
The weekend also saw the first firing up of our new Caterer. Led by club member Mohammad Mashal, we have every right to believe that this will be the start of something great. We are hoping he calls his new venture “Mohs” and I know we will all support him all the way.
It was a great weekend and again goes to prove, “if you put good things on, people will come”, as we had between 50 and 250 people in the club from 11am each day.
None of this would have been possible without all the volunteers that got so heavily involved. Thanks to everyone who helped from woah to goah.
We made lots of great contacts over the weekend and are hopeful of bringing some exciting news soon about regular Rockabilly Friday dance nights. Stay tuned for that one.
This Saturday 25th we have our Rotary Fundraising night. Rotary have recently announced that they will be supporting our farmers who are really doing it tough at the moment. Tickets are $10 and there will be lots of prizes and fun to be had so why not come along for the night.
On the course……….,
This week will be our first of 3 weeks without Dave and Liane looking after us in the pro-shop. They are in Ireland on a well-deserved break. Dave will be getting beaten up by Liane’s very protective big brother whilst Liane reconnects with much missed family and friends. There may be the odd Guiness on the cards as well. Apparently, it’s good for you.
In their absence, we will be looked after by Mark Griffin on Mondays and Fridays, Josh (a great mate of Dave’s) on Tuesday and Thursdays, and Tania Kennedy on her comeback tour on Wednesdays. Mark has the best laugh in the club, Josh hits the ball even further than Dave (Dave says his short game is shite though) and Tania is just great value. Come on in and say hi.
We cannot help but to start off our golfing wrap with the success of our girls on Monday in the Keno NSW 4Ball District Final. Wenty was represented by Sue West and Susan Maloney, Leonie Wilson and Lea Schaefer. All the girls were well motivated by Ruth Lucas and Jenny Gorman on the day and wow, do those ladies know how to put on a spread. Yummy.
The two Sues softened up the field, playing early and Lea and Leonie dealt the killer blow, playing in the last group, recording Plus 8 and winning their way to Bonneville for the State Final. Congratulation Ladies.
On Saturday, those Cullens of Chancery Lane made their presence felt with Oliver winning the day with 39 points and a nearest to the pin. Brother Lachlan and ol’ grey beard father Peter were only beaten on a countback in the teams by Dave Burke and Mick Woolen. To complete the routing, Lachlan won nearest to the pin on 5 and the mystery hole……, and of-course best Junior.
Tilly Elderfield continued her run of form with a win in the Women’s event and also won the second round of our Handiskins. If I were a gambling man, I’d be backing Tilly to take out the Golden Goblet in the next weeks Medal round. Sorry Tilly, I have most likely put the Mock on you.
On the Handiskins, 34 points is the top score at the moment, so there is still time to join up for the last 3 weeks. 3 more sign ups will mean the final prize pool is $1200 so sign up this weekend if you want to have a go.
The Big Bopper, Sean Sparks also continued his great form on Thursday with a win in the singles. John Armstrong knows a winner when he sees one and paired up with Sean to win the teams. Anne Frazer won the Women’s event.
Dave Payens and Johnny Byrne shared the honours in Tuesday Medley, Steve York making the trip up the mountain to win best visitor.

Wenty Juniors
Only one week until our Family Fun Day on Sunday 2nd September. There is a little bit of everything on the day. You can play 4-person Ambrose in the morning, do the fun challenges in the afternoon, or of course you can do both. The afternoon activities include putt-putt golf, inflatable hitting nett, beat the pro chipping challenge and a raffle with some fantastic prizes, including a Ping golf bag. The BBQ will also be pumping. What a cracking way to spend Father’s Day. Call Wentworth Falls Pro Shop on 4757 1202 to book a tee time for the Ambrose or for more information about the day.
Despite the ferocious conditions, 5 juniors teed it up in Sunday’s Junior 10-hole Challenge this week and here are the podium finishers: 1st – Lachlan Cullen, 18points; 2nd – Chazz Ritchie, 17 points; 3rd – Oliver Cullen, 10 points.
The weather conditions tamed the field in the Saturday open competition. Well, all except one… Oliver Cullen chalked up a win for the kids, taking out the entire competition with a very impressive 39 points. Lachlan Cullen won the junior prize for the day.
WFCC have two teams competing in Pennants this year. The competition doesn’t start until October, but training has begun. This is handicap match-play practice and our kids would like to practice with each other and other club members. If ever you are able to help out by giving our juniors a “practice match” please meet at the pro shop between 4:00-4:30pm on Wednesdays.
Supercoach David Paddison is having a well-earned holiday for the next two weeks. This means that the beginner’s junior clinic will also take a little holiday. The advanced junior clinic on Tuesdays will be on as usual while David is away. Have a great trip Supercoach.
