The Week at Wenty
Whether you are in the club or out on the course, everywhere you looked, something was happening. Faulty Tales is back, fully remastered and an absolute romp. The Jackpot hole went off for the second time and Bronco Djura is back to claim his crown as the best golfer in the joint.
In the Clubhouse…………………………..,
Only 12 episodes were made of Fawlty Towers and it’s now over 40 years since the cult classic show was first aired. A little-known fact is that the building used for the hotel exterior in the show was actually a golf club in Buckinghamshire by the name of Wooburn Grange Country Club. The clubhouse burnt down in 1991 but unlike Wenty, was never rebuilt. So 40 years later, it’s now back at a golf club, go figure. Do yourself a favour, have a meal and see the show.
We will be getting more live theatre coming to Wenty so stay tuned for that.
Also in the club, we are on the hunt for a new caterer and have some really good prospects expressing their interest.
On the course………………………………….,
Dollar, Dollar, Dollar. That’s all it costs to get a chance of the Jackpot on the ninth. Whilst a number of us have ended up in Tass James’s or Joss Bennett’s front lawn, on Thursday, Magda Cawthorne tamed the beast and put her tee shot to 48cm. She walked off that day with over $700 in her account. Happy days.
Thursday was also the day when Steve Giles returned to Wenty after a month off, left any swing glitches where he went away, and won A grade Monthly mid-week medal. Mike Zikan and David Burke were the other grade winners on the day and Lea Schaefer took out the Women’s event.
Tuesday was all about Colin Foster and Stephen Parker, who both scored an impressive 38points. I played with Chazz Ritchie and Matteen Mashal later in the day. Whilst the record will never hold as it was a little wind assisted, Matteen putted his second shot on the first from a meter off the front edge. That’s a 360M drive. Oh to be young, strong, flexible and talented. Wow is all I can say.
Saturday saw Bronco Djura and Chester Romanowski tee off at ”Ice O’clock”. It’s amazing how they survived those first few holes but at the end of the day, Bronco had 74 off the stick and Chester had 28 putts and won the day with 42 points. I love it when Chester wins because I get to say his name at Presentation that evening. Romanowski really rolls off the tongue and creates an atmosphere like a wrestling match. So much fun.
Chazz Ritchie and Matteen Mashal won the American Foresomes and the Pabian brothers both had the radar dialled in and scored two of the nearest to the pins, with Adam winning the mystery hole.
Just on the Saturday Mystery Hole, here is a special announcement. It’s time for a change.
From next Saturday, we will be awarding the mystery hole jackpot to the player who scores the nearest to the pin out of all the par 3s, including the 11th in one shot.
Special mention has to go to our runner up on Saturday. Oscar Gregory, off 21 had 8 pars and a birdie to end up with 39 points. I think that would be the definition of “rocks and diamonds”. Oscar would still be scratching his head.
We received our supply of Luek the Duck head covers and Peter Lehman wines for our weekly Handiskins winner. Our club Handiskins starts on Saturday 11th August so make sure you keep those 5 Saturdays available. The competition was great last year with a pool of $1200 to split in the final on Sunday 7th October. The pool will be even bigger if we get more starters. The more the merrier and the wallets fatter.
The Men’s and Women’s Keno Fourball are both on this week and the district final is at Wenty this year in August. Get involved because Bonneville beckons.
Wenty Juniors
He’s done it! William Taiyakupt has broken the magical 15 point barrier in a Cadet round and now moves on to the front tee’s for his next game. He is now only 15 points away from getting his official handicap. Here are the results from Sunday’s Junior 10-hole Challenge:
1st – Jesse Hardaker, 21 points; 2nd – William Taiyakupt, 17 points; 3rd – Mitchell Browne, 11 points.
Last week Chazz Ritchie and Matteen Mashal played in the State Championships up in Newcastle, and what a week it was for them. After four rounds of golf against the best of the best Chazz finished in 9th place in his age group in the Plate Division and Matteen Mashal came 14th. Well done lads.
Next week it’s the under 12’s turn for the State Championships and Wentworth Falls has a representative in Harry Daniels. Everyone at the club wishes him the best of luck.
