 Club Captains Report 2017-2018

I have realized over the last year what a privilege it is to be the Club Captain of Wentworth Fall Country Club. On a daily basis, when I interact with our members or indeed with other Golf Club’s membership, it is clear that the Club Captain can really make a difference, and I take that responsibility seriously.

Most of the Sporting Clubs throughout Australia face an ever-mounting challenge to remain viable in a society where the majority have become both time and resource poor, so we need to tackle this head on. Innovation, flexibility and staying true to our identity as a community club are key.

Our advantage over most, is our Membership, our Facility including our Golf Course, and our Community. We will need to draw deeply on all those things if we are going to give our children and grandchildren access to this unique legacy.

One of the key elements to our club’s successful future is nurturing and development of the golf, and there are a number of key contributors that give me great confidence in it’s future.

I have been a member since 2012 and I have never seen the course better maintained. Great results do not come overnight and Damien and his team, particularly Chris and Laurance have worked tirelessly over the last year to give us what we have today. It is clear that Damien truly knows what it takes to bring a course to life, and even more importantly, make it happen.

The Golf Professional is the face of the Golf Club. We have been blessed to have the services of Rob Kennedy and his family, and now Dave Paddison and Liane. As I am sure you have all noticed, Dave has a passion for the game and the drive to help us create something truly special at Wenty. We look forward to being part of his journey.

Our membership has always been the lifeblood of the club. Every interaction I have ever had with one of our members reinforces that they are heart and soul Wenty. If we want innovation, pragmatism and hands on support, we don’t need to look any further than our membership. I know that all we must do is ask.

Juniors are a key part of our future and all our Juniors’ development in both the skills required for the game and just as, if not more importantly, the etiquette needed, has been phenomenal. We have 50 Juniors on our books, with over half of them working their way through the development program. This would not have been possible without the drive of Tom Daniels, Rob Kennedy and now Dave Paddison.

Another key aspect to the ongoing golfing success of our club is through great Sponsors. Dave Mellor from d’Vine Cellars, Matt Hickey from I Talk Travel and Cruise, Andrew & Cam Macarther from Blue Mountains Mazda, Steve Fitz and Family from Katoomba Tyre Services, as well as our wonderful hole sponsors all deserve both our thanks and loyal support.

Looking after our existing sponsors and growing our supporter base will be a key target in the following year.

Our course Volunteers have done a stellar job again this year. A classic example of the impact of our course volunteers is the raising of the under-tree canopies. That alone has made the course more enjoyable to play. Thanks to you all.

We also need to thank those volunteers also work with us away from the course proper. We would be still counting cards if it wasn’t for Allen Helmrich and there are plenty of others that we need to thank for their selfless contributions.

And finally, speaking of volunteers, over the last month, we have 3 new members joining our Board of Directors, all ready to roll up their sleeves. We thank them for putting up their hands and joining Paul Garnsey, Magda Cawthorne, Dave Mellor, Jamie Galbraith, Simon Whitehead and myself.

I would like to thank personally, our 3 outgoing Board members, Mike Gundy, Steve Fitz and Stuart Liddell. All three have made truly significant contributions.

From Tee to Green, there was some great golf played this year.

Representing the Club in the District Pennants has always been a great part of the golfing year. This year we had 4 Men’s and 1 Women’s teams taking on the rest. Murray’s Masters have been the team to beat for many years and again proved too strong, winning again in 2018. Paul Garnsey’s Kortum Shield team won for the fifth year in a row, a great achievement. From all reports, Paul’s team was anchored by young Aiden Cullen, another great endorsement of our Juniors. Paul Nagle’s Kortum team was in it till last gasp and our Seniors performed fabulously well, with only a last-minute washout stopping them from taking a tilt at the title. Chazz Ritchie, our Junior Club Champion made us all proud as our Number 1. Our Women’s teams, led by our Ladies Captain, Kerry Penfold, are still battling it out, and this year, are playing an inter district competition as well, a great innovation. Thanks again to Dave Mellor from d’Vine Cellars and our Pro-shop for sponsoring our Pennants efforts this year.

In our Club Championships, Matt Hickey made it 4 in a row as the number 1 golfer in the club, and by 27 strokes no less. Those dusty old clubs might have to work a bit harder next year if our newly minted Junior Club Champion, Chazz Ritchie has anything to say about it. Kerry Regan won the Ladies Club Championship back in 2006 and 12 years later, Kerry is again our Ladies Club Champion. Murray Patterson is the 2018 Veterans Champion and that makes it an incredible 9 out of the last 13 years. Enter him in the Melbourne Cup I say, what a stayer. Thanks to Dave Mellor at d’Vine Cellars for your ongoing support of this great annual event.

During 2017, we sadly lost our long-time member and Club Patron, Winston Pickering. Winston served the club in many capacities and as a fitting recognition, our Graded Matchplay Championships will now be named in his honour. Farquhar Boyd won in 2017 and he will be defending this most revered trophy in 2018.

Well done to all our members who won themselves onto our honour boards this year. Gold is your colour.

Congratulations as well go to the Winners of our other premier events.

In the I Talk Travel and Cruise Wentworth Falls Open, Christopher Holmes from Leura won the scratch prize, playing in horrific conditions, but the star of the day had to be young Lachlan Cullen, who had an incredible 59 net. This event has become one of the” must play” events on the mountain’s golfing calendar and we thank Matt Hickey and all those at I talk Travel and Cruise for making it possible.

The Katoomba Tyre Services Cup was played in June 2017 and April 2018 so 2 of our Golfers get a mention in this report. Laurance Petkevitch won this major prize in 2017 and Sue West took the honours in 2018. Thanks again to Steve, Jenny and family from Katoomba Tyre Services for you ongoing support of the club.

This year we also have a new Sponsored Major event, the Coca Cola Challenge, played over May and June, and includes our mid-week warriors. Thanks to Andrew and Jeff from Coca Cola for your support.

Our Holden Scramble and Handiskins events were a great success in 2017/2018, with both returning later this year. These events would not have been possible without the extra efforts of our Pro-Shop, so thanks to Rob, Tania and Dave.

Another full program is instore this next year so to all of us slicers and hookers, toppers and skiers, we are only a good day with the putter away from victory.

Yours in Golf

Steve West

Wentworth Falls Juniors

Congratulations Jesse Hardaker. This fine young gentleman has successfully completed the “Mini Swingers” program and is now officially a “Cadet”. He will join all of our other junior members on Sunday 20th May for the relaunch of the Junior Cadet 10-hole Challenge, run by Wentworth Falls Pro Shop. This is a weekly FREE competition for all WFCC junior members. It kicks off at 1:30pm every Sunday, and all you have to do to play is turn up at 1 o’clock and register in the pro shop.

Juniors that play regularly on a Saturday are still welcome to play in the 10-hole Challenge on a Sunday. It’s a great opportunity to hone your skills in a fun filled environment with your buddies. Speaking of Saturday’s, the junior prize this week went to Jacob Cullen.

Don’t forget the FREE weekly junior clinics. The advanced clinic is on Tuesday’s and the beginner’s clinic is now on a Wednesday. Both clinics start at 4pm. For more information contact Wentworth Falls Pro Shop on 4757 1899.

I just wanted to write to let you know just how impressed I was with your club. In fact, everyone who attended the lunch was very, very impressed. Your staff could not have been more friendly, efficient and helpful. Even the young guy behind the bar was super-friendly whilst still being professional.  The food, without exception, was tremendous.
– Anne Hutchins
We often take family and visitors to the Thursday/Friday night servings and always found that everybody has enjoyed the food. The service is great with contact with the chef and his staff are wonderful and nothing is a problem for them even on a fully booked night they are so obliging.
– Mark R
Lovely Country golf club, with nice views over the course. Friendly atmosphere and reasonable prices.
– Martin C
An excellent venue for a special function. Friendly helpful staff and scrumptious food. I attended two Christmas lunches this past week and both were terrific. Also the Friday night carvery is worth trying. And the coffee is good too.
– Maunie K
This club has a real atmosphere about it and it never fails to please. Food, service all good. The servings are very generous and on most occasions are served quite quickly. The wine prices are attractive.
– Geoffrey W
My grandparents live in the area and after staying longer than expected visiting them suggested we have dinner at the country club. The only complaint I have is that they didn't tell me how good It was! - or I wouldn't have had so much for lunch.
– r b
A great course with attractive flora and fauna, and highly recommended for anyone visiting the Blue Mountains.
– Naysan H
Thank you to my good friends at Wentworth Falls Country Club for your support and Fund raising to help me get to World Championships in Germany. This club and its community have supported me over the past 10 years, and for that I'm grateful. The Friendliest and best club in the Mountains.
– Moe Westmoreland
The Society of Mountain Artists had their Christmas lunch at the club last Thursday. It was the best ever, the club goes out of its way to make it work and the food was outstanding.
– Marie Morris
My family and I would like to thank Jackie and Matt and everyone else at the club for making our daughters and son in law Monique & Joel's wedding such a wonderful night. It was an amazing night and all of our guests commented on the friendliness of your staff and how lovely the food was. I thank you again from the bottom of my heart.
– Julie Christie
Cannot express how well the staff helped on our wedding day, food was delicious, great atmosphere. Thank you.
– Nicky Fungo
I had my wedding here in November… place looked great, staff are so helpful. Definitely recommend.
– Christina Clarke
We had our wedding reception here last year and absolutely loved it. Awesome food and we got to drive up in a golf buggy.
